Do you offer deep tissue massage in San Carlos?

Yes, though not as its own line on the booking page. Harbor Wellness runs 8 services through Square and none of them is called Deep Tissue. The booking you want is the Signature Massage, at 45 minutes for $89, 60 minutes for $109, 90 minutes for $149 or 120 minutes for $189, worked firm because you asked for it.

Square's own catalog uses the phrase the same way. The description of our Massage + Lymphatic Facial opens with a 60-minute Deep Tissue or Swedish Massage, so the two sit there as ways of working the same hour, picked at the table rather than at checkout. Firm carries no surcharge, and hot stones, hot towels, a hot compress and cupping come with all 4 Signature lengths.

How firm should a deep tissue massage be?

Firm enough that you feel every stroke and still breathe out into it. Pressure that makes you brace works against the session, because the muscle tightens under the hand. Most people settle around a 6 or 7 on a 1 to 10 scale and stay there comfortably.

The safety record argues for accurate pressure rather than maximum pressure. NCCIH puts the risk of harmful effects from massage at low overall, with rare reports of 3 serious ones — a blood clot, a nerve injury and a bone fracture — and links some of those cases to vigorous types of massage such as deep tissue.

Give a number, not an adjective

Firm means different things to different hands, so a number travels better than a word. Say yours in the first 5 minutes rather than the last 5. Tissue warms as the session runs, which is why a 7 at minute 10 often reads as a 5 by minute 40.

The phrase worth dropping

As deep as you can go hands the decision to the one person in the room who cannot feel what you feel. Replace it with a region, a number and permission to check in.

  1. Name a small area. The right side of my neck and the top of my shoulder blade is a target; my back is a region 2 feet across.
  2. Give a number from 1 to 10 in the first 5 minutes, before the therapist has settled into a rhythm.
  3. Say what your week looks like — 8 hours at a desk, a toddler on one hip, a long drive twice a week.
  4. Answer out loud when the therapist asks whether the pressure is right. Changing it mid-stroke takes about 2 seconds.

Deep tissue massage San Carlos: which length to book

Pick by how many areas you want worked rather than by how much time you can spare. Firm work costs warm-up: an upper back stiff since Monday usually takes the first 10 or 15 minutes before anything specific happens.

At 45 minutes and $89 that leaves one region done properly, so choose neck and shoulders or low back and hips rather than both. The longer three add areas rather than intensity: $109 buys back, neck and shoulders, $149 adds two problem areas worked 10 or 15 minutes each, and $189 covers legs, feet and scalp unhurried.

Length matters more than technique when you are treating something rather than unwinding. NCCIH's research digest describes a 2014 trial of 228 people with chronic neck pain that tested 30 minute visits against 60 minute visits; the 60 minute sessions given more than once a week were the ones that helped. A single appointment of any length gives you one good hour rather than a course of treatment.

Deep tissue massage San Carlos pricing: the 4 Signature lengths
Length Price What it covers at firm pressure
45 min$89One region done properly — neck and shoulders, or low back and hips
60 min$109Back, neck and shoulders, with time still left on one stubborn spot
90 min$149Whole body, plus 10 to 15 minutes each on two problem areas
120 min$189Whole body unhurried, with legs, feet and scalp included rather than rushed

What are the hot stones and cups for?

Heat comes first because warming an area is the ordinary way to make firm work tolerable, which lets a therapist reach the same layer with less force. The compress holds heat on one region and the stones carry it while the hands work elsewhere. All 4 arrive as part of the Signature Massage rather than as paid add-ons.

Cupping runs the other way round, lifting tissue with suction instead of pressing into it. NCCIH lists 4 possible side effects — persistent skin discoloration, scars, burns and infections — and says that while cupping may help reduce pain, the evidence behind that is weak. Anyone with eczema or psoriasis should mention it at the door, because NCCIH names those 2 conditions as ones cupping may worsen.

Cupping also leaves temporary round marks, which is the part people ask about before a wedding. Any of it can be left out on the day, and the $109 hour stays a $109 hour.

Will I be sore the day after?

Mildly, often, and it should read like the day after a workout — dull, spread out, gone inside 24 to 48 hours. A bruise, a sharp point that catches when you turn, or anything that changes how you move means the pressure went past useful. Start 2 points lower next time.

Set the expectation at the right height before you buy a run of appointments. NCCIH summarises a 2015 analysis of 25 studies covering 3,096 people with low-back pain that found short-term improvement, with the investigators reporting very little confidence in the size of it. Firm pressure does not change that arithmetic, and our guide on whether massage helps back pain works through the same numbers.

  • Pregnancy has its own booking. Prenatal Massage is $119 for 60 minutes or $159 for 90 minutes, set up for side-lying.
  • Blood thinners, a history of clots, recent surgery, fragile bones or a healing injury are worth a word with your clinician first. NCCIH makes that point in its own 6-item rundown: massage appears to have few risks in trained hands, and certain conditions still need checking.
  • Cancer treatment, now or recently. Our guide on massage during cancer care covers what changes in the room.
  • A first massage in years. Start around a 5, book 45 minutes at $89, and go firmer next visit.

Booking it at 1658 El Camino Real

We are open every day from 10 AM to 9 PM at 1658 El Camino Real, San Carlos, CA 94070. Booking runs through Square, which shows live availability, so you can see whether a 90 minute slot exists tonight. Call (650) 622-8666 to ask what is open in the next hour.

Parking and walk-ins

Street parking on El Camino Real is free and usually open in the evening. Walk-ins get a room whenever one is free, so a 45 minute session at $89 after work is often possible without notice. A 7:30 PM start on a 60 minute booking still finishes 30 minutes before the 9 PM close.

Who is working on you

All our therapists are fully CAMTC-certified and licensed by the California Massage Therapy Council; the certificates are at the front desk if you want to see one. If you are buying the session for someone else, gift cards hold a Square balance across all 8 services rather than a voucher for one.

Questions people ask

Do you offer deep tissue massage in San Carlos?

Yes, as a pressure rather than a separate booking. You reserve the Signature Massage — 45 minutes for $89, 60 for $109, 90 for $149 or 120 for $189 — and ask for firm, specific work. Square's description of our Massage + Lymphatic Facial names a 60-minute Deep Tissue or Swedish Massage as its first half.

Does firm pressure cost extra?

No. A Signature Massage runs $89 at 45 minutes, $109 at 60, $149 at 90 and $189 at 120, whatever pressure you ask for. Hot stones, hot towels, a hot compress and cupping are included at all 4 lengths.

Should a deep tissue massage hurt?

No. A workable ceiling for most people sits at 6 or 7 on a 1 to 10 scale — firm enough to feel every stroke, not so firm that you brace and hold your breath. NCCIH lists 3 rare but serious problems on record, a blood clot, a nerve injury and a bone fracture, and links some of them to vigorous techniques such as deep tissue work.

How long should I book for neck and shoulder tension?

60 minutes at $109 is the usual answer. NCCIH's research digest describes a 2014 trial of 228 people with chronic neck pain in which 60 minute visits given more than once a week outperformed 30 minute ones. Book 45 minutes at $89 when you only want one region covered.

Will I be sore the day after a firm massage?

Often mildly, and it should feel like the day after a workout: dull, general, gone within 24 to 48 hours. Bruising, a sharp point of pain, or anything that changes how you move means the pressure went too far. Say your number 2 points lower next time, and say it earlier in the session.

Who should book something gentler?

Anyone pregnant books Prenatal Massage instead, at $119 for 60 minutes or $159 for 90. Blood thinners, a history of clots, recent surgery or fragile bones are worth raising with your clinician first, and NCCIH makes the same point in its 6-item rundown on massage therapy. If your last massage was years ago, start around a 5 on the 1 to 10 scale.
