How far is Harbor Wellness from Foster City?

About 15 minutes, traffic allowing. Harbor Wellness Massage is at 1658 El Camino Real, San Carlos, CA 94070, and the phone is (650) 622-8666. The studio sits west of Highway 101 and Foster City sits east of it, so whichever way you go, the drive crosses the freeway and finishes on El Camino Real.

A massage near Foster City only earns its place if you will make the trip after a long ride, which is why the hours matter as much as the mileage. We are open 10 AM to 9 PM every day of the week, so a 7 PM Tuesday start after an evening on the Bay Trail is an ordinary booking rather than a favour.

Driving over

Allow more than 15 minutes between 4 PM and 6 PM, and rather less at 8 PM on a Sunday. There is no bridge toll on the way and no parking structure to hunt for at this end. If the route you know puts you on El Camino Real early, stay on it: 1658 sits on the San Carlos stretch, and the numbers climb steadily enough that you can see where you are from the car.

Parking and the door

Street parking on El Camino Real out front is free. The storefront glass carries the number 1658, the hours and the phone in letters you can read from the sidewalk, so you will know the right door before you park. The door itself says by appointment, walk-ins welcome, and both halves of that are true when a room happens to be open.

When should you book a massage near Foster City after training?

Somewhere in the 24 to 72 hours after the hard session, for most people. Soreness from unfamiliar work tends to arrive about a day later and peak inside 3 days, so booking in that window puts the therapist on tissue that is already tender. Say that at the start and ask for less pressure than you would normally take.

The 48 hours before an event is the case worth a second thought. Legs about to race do not need a new stimulus, so a lighter 45 minute session at $89 makes more sense than 90 minutes of firm work. After a finish line, give it a day before you book anything.

For an ordinary training block, stop timing it around how you feel and put it on the calendar. A 45 minute slot every 2 or 3 weeks costs $89 a visit and takes one evening hour out of a fortnight, which is a rhythm you can hold for a whole season.

Does massage speed up recovery?

Not in the way it gets sold to athletes. The largest look at the question so far, a 2020 systematic review and meta-analysis in BMJ Open Sport & Exercise Medicine, pooled 29 randomised studies covering 1,012 participants and found no evidence that massage improves strength, jump, sprint, endurance or fatigue. What it did find was small but statistically significant improvement in flexibility and in delayed onset muscle soreness.

So the honest pitch is soreness and how the week feels, rather than watts or splits. NCCIH puts the risk of harmful effects from massage at low, with the rare serious problems on record involving very vigorous techniques — worth carrying into the room if you were planning to ask for maximum pressure 48 hours before a race.

29 studies, 1,012 people, no measurable gain in sprint or endurance, and a small measurable drop in soreness. That is the claim worth $89.

What does the Signature Massage include?

Hot stones, hot towels, hot compress and cupping, all named in the Square listing rather than quoted at the counter afterwards. The four lengths are $89 for 45 minutes, $109 for 60 minutes, $149 for 90 minutes and $189 for 120 minutes. The Grand Opening Special currently adds complimentary hot stone, hot compress and cupping on select massage services.

Warm towels and a hot compress before deeper work make firm pressure easier to sit through, which is a practical benefit rather than a medical one. Take the stones and the compress and leave the cups if you would rather; the price holds either way.

Cupping, and how to leave it out

Cups sit on the back or legs for a few minutes and draw the skin up, which leaves round marks behind. NCCIH describes the cupping research as limited and low in quality and lists skin discoloration among the documented side effects, so if you have a race photo or a wedding inside the next 7 days, say no when you arrive. Our walk-through of cupping has the longer version if you want it before you decide.

45, 60, 90 or 120 minutes for sore legs?

For one angry calf, 45 minutes at $89 usually covers it, because a therapist can only spend so long on a single muscle before the rest of the hour has to go somewhere. Book 90 minutes at $149 when you want legs plus back and shoulders after a long event.

Repetition beats length across a season. The soreness effect measured in that 2020 review was small and short-lived, so a 45 minute session every 2 or 3 weeks does more for a training year than one 120 minute session a quarter.

  • 45 minutes, $89. One region worked properly — legs, or back and shoulders. The maintenance length, and the one that fits between a swim and dinner.
  • 60 minutes, $109. One region plus a pass over the rest of you. A sensible default if you come about once a month.
  • 90 minutes, $149. Full body with real time on two problem areas, which is what a long event earns.
  • 120 minutes, $189. Two hours on the table, and a 7 PM start if you want it finished by the 9 PM close.

What to tell the therapist about a sore muscle

Name the sport, the session and the muscle, standing up, before you lie down. "Ran 18 miles Sunday, left calf" tells a therapist more about your legs than "my calves hurt" does, and it decides where the hour goes. Then correct the pressure out loud once they start, because 2 minutes into the calf is the moment for it, not the drive home.

One thing people ask on the phone: there is no Deep Tissue listing on our menu. The Square catalog holds 8 services and deep tissue is a pressure you request, so firm work means the Signature Massage worked firm. Square's own description of the Massage + Lymphatic Facial reads the same way, opening with a 60-minute Deep Tissue or Swedish Massage inside a single booking.

Questions people ask

How far is Harbor Wellness Massage from Foster City?

About 15 minutes outside commute hours. The studio is at 1658 El Camino Real, San Carlos, CA 94070, west of Highway 101, while Foster City sits east of it, so the drive crosses the freeway and finishes on El Camino Real. Open every day from 10 AM to 9 PM on (650) 622-8666.

How long after a hard workout should I get a massage?

For most training, 24 to 72 hours afterwards, because soreness usually arrives about a day later and peaks inside 3 days. Straight after a race is the exception: give the legs a day first. If an event falls inside the next 48 hours, book a lighter 45 minute session at $89 rather than 90 minutes of firm work.

Does massage really speed up recovery?

Not measurably. A 2020 review in BMJ Open Sport & Exercise Medicine pooled 29 studies and 1,012 participants and found no evidence that massage improves strength, jump, sprint, endurance or fatigue. It did find small improvements in flexibility and in delayed onset muscle soreness, which is a fair reason to book and a poor reason to expect a faster Saturday.

Is cupping an extra charge?

No. The Signature Massage is listed on Square as including hot stones, hot towels, hot compress and cupping, and the Grand Opening Special currently adds complimentary hot stone, hot compress and cupping on select services. A 60 minute session costs $109 with the cups or without them. Say so at the start if you would rather skip them, since the marks take several days to fade.

Should I book 45 minutes or 90 minutes for sore legs?

For one sore area, 45 minutes at $89 is usually enough. Book 90 minutes at $149 when you want the legs plus back and shoulders after a long event or a heavy block. Coming back every 2 to 3 weeks for the shorter session does more across a season than one long session a quarter.

Can I ask for firm pressure on one specific muscle?

Yes, and it is not a separate booking. The Square menu holds 8 services and deep tissue is a pressure style, so you book the Signature Massage and name the muscle in the first 30 seconds. Give the therapist a number from 1 to 10 for the pressure you want and correct it out loud while they work.
